Dead Alive (USA) – The Madness of Dr Ludvig von Brainmatter
October 24 (Independent)
The Art –
You can’t seriously believe that I would allow an act with the Dead Alive moniker to simply pass me by with comment? One of, if not, the finest comedic splatter films of all time and there’s an act sharing the same name. I’m on board, and most definitely when offered art such as this. Ed Repka esque caricatures front and center, Re-Animator nods, a touch of vintage Witchery (Dead Hot, n Ready and Restless and Dead the albums for those who are curious), a splash of comedy ala Mel Brook’s Young Frankenstein, and a definite, and more traditional, Dr. (Baron) Frankenstein/mad scientist backdrop. All bright, vivid and larger than life. To mention that I’m eager and draped in intrigue is a gross under estimation of the excitement levels I’m currently exhibiting.
The Audio –
A fantastic introduction starts this one off. Stylistically this sees Thrash, Speed, Crossover and Melodic DM playing well together. At times it’s truly as if Anthrax are jamming with Witchery, with an occasional splash of Macabre to mix things up. Sinister auras and eerie atmospheres are effective, and the riffs (for the most part) sharp, and along with a delightful array of pace in the rhythm department infectious enough to incite twitching within various appendages. Overall, this is a wicked slab of audio, recommended for fans of swift melodies, cheesy genre films, gallows humor, and the macabre.
